Those northerners seem to be perplexed by our breakfast preferences. The least they could do for forcing us to stay in the Union is to provide tortillas with a level of respect on par with toast and bagels.
Per the the New York Times, via my friend Michael Wilt, here’s the story.
I’ll now allow the Tamale House to act as a cultural eating experience. Perhaps more due to the fact that their prices are truly jaw-dropping. I believe I was even able to successfully relay a Tamale House cost analysis to my mother, the perennial bargain hunter, over the phone, as she offered up a rare, and emphatic, “wow”. Make sure to visit the Tamale House before 2 PM on any day but Sunday, and take some cash, as that’s all they accept. Perhaps you can follow-up your visit by completing the I Luv Video Scavenger Hunt, as it’s just a few blocks away.
I’ll also approve the BEST restaurant in Austin (when one weighs both price and quality). Polvos on South First is ridiculously awesome “interior Mexican.” Perhaps you can use spring break to eat at Polvos and then head down to End of an Ear to catch some free SXSW. Polvos is always open, and usually packed – but I’ve never waited more than 30 minutes to eat. Trust me, it’s well worth any wait. The Fish Fajitas and Puerco Adovado (sp?), and everything else on the menu are great.
